Help with large root

Hi People

I helped a friend down a few trees in his back garden a few weeks back and grabbed most of it for the lathe. Anyway he has dug up the root and dropped it off now and I'm looking for advice.

This thing is huge well over a metre square! Should I leave it to dry out? (god knows where i'm going to put it) Should I chop it up? if so how? My chainsaw won't touch and my bow saw isn't large enough.

The wood is some form of birch I think I can't attach a picture as it keeps saying the files are to large

Wood drying time is about one year per 1" of thickness

needs to be cut somehow but if you have loads anyway is it worth it ?

Being semi new to turning and working with wood I tought the grain inside the root wood be interesting to turn.

if it makes difference it's heading for somebodies wood pile

If you cut it up it should make the files smaller :mrgreen:

When you are cutting it up be a bit careful because root balls can pick up stones and it ain't a very nice way to find them with your saw, which ever it is..

As Miles said photobucket. There is an option on there to reduce file sizes.
