Whilst on my hols last year, I spotted an unusual looking carving that had been carried out on some supporting members of an old timber framed building. Upon my return to this country I decided to quickly replicate it, and the following photo was the result. I'd be interested to know if there was a specific name for this carving detail.

Thanks. :)

I spotted it on a building in Switzerland, but thinking about what you have said, it was quite a colonial design of building.

I forgot to mention that you need to ignore the pattern at the jaw end of the photo. It was a first attempt screw up , but I decide just to leave it in place and carry on. :)

Eddie,

Great try, I like the effect from different angles.

I though it was a type of chip carving. Chip carving has its roots in the tradition of "kerbschnitzen" found principally in Switzerland, Bavaria, Austria etc.
