Purchased microsoft flight sim X gold edition. (deluxe edition is not supposed to be compatible)

It took over two hours to install (10gbs) and then there was no launch link anywhere (not in programs start)

It did show up in control panel/programs as installed.

I have looked around for an active flight sim forum but cannot find an active one.

Any here know of some active help

the program is supposed to be compatible with W7 (I have got pro whether that is the problem?)

Spent 5 hours of my happy retirement trying to get this going but I am very despondent.

You could try pressing the Windows key, then start typing 'flight simulator' - it should match the installed programme after a few keystrokes; then press Enter.

Go to your c drive, and navigate to either the program files, or program files (x86) folders. There should be a Microsoft flight simulator folder (or something like that) inside should be an exe or application file. You can create a shortcut from that

Agreed. Most likely in x86 as that is where most things go. If you find it then double click whichever icon is labelled .exe or application.

Thanks for info and messages.

I did uninstall FSX, so I will reinstall again tomorrow morning.

I recall seeing an FSX icon in the program file section but I was scared to drag it. However I did double click it and nothing happened.

Don't drag the icon, right click and click the create shortcut button.

If you double clicked it and nothing happened coupled with it not appearing in your start menu points to it maybe being a problem with administrative rights ...... what windows are you running? ( I would guess vista or 7), are you the only user on the computer? Or is it set up for multiple users?

When you reinstall tomorrow (providing it still doesn't work of course :) ), track down the .exe in the programs folder, then right click it and choose run as administrator. If that fails to work, again right click, go to properties and some where in there should be a compatabilities tab, try running it in vista or xp compatability mode and see if that helps.

If none of those work ..... then I'm stumped :( sorry

PS I think one other issue with that flight simulator can be driver issues, a friend of mine had all kinds of problems with the creative sound drivers he had installed clashing.

I think Microsoft will still help you if your having trouble, I know they helped him and that was less than a year ago

I used to use FS, unfortunately Mickeysoft shut down all the online multiplayer servers and completely ruined it IMO

It used to be quite interesting chatting with other people on the other side of the planet, formation flying around their home towns. I also spent a lot of time flying with a real pilot and his friend (in the US) who was using FS as practice for the real thing - they knew little about flightsim so I told them how to use the software and the pilot taught me about the correct way to fly the thing.

It's not bad as a stand alone game, but much better multiplayer with other people :)

I did a google search and did find some recent posts on several forums about Flight Sim X including problems with installing and uninstalling. Have a look at http://support.precisionmanuals.com/KB/ ... l-fsx.aspx . I downloaded the demo version of the software from MS and installed it without any apparent problems and it took no longer than I would expect. When installed it had put an icon on the desktop, also another on the task bar. It added the Microsoft Fight Sim start and readme options in 'Microsoft Games' (in the programs option from the Start Button at the bottom left of the screen)

It seems to run OK and gives two demo missions.

I reinstalled this morning (it took nearly 3 hours)

Finally got the starting link on to the monitor. Went to C and X86 and found fsx, right clicked the fsx icon and created the icon, and it works. ~Still no program listed at Programs, but it does appear if I type flight simulator.

The flights are working satisfactory but dashboards are differnet to previous versions so switches are in new locations for me.

Louise I have not yet installed the Accelerator version, but you say there is now no multi flyer?

I shall now go and look for updates, there are some bugs around.

Misterfish, I am surprised that you had a trouble free installation, I have been nearly 11 hours getting going.

Thanks all, could not have done it without your assistance.

I kept a stern eye on the computer and told it I wasn't going to stand for any nonsense!!

Anyway - the impotrant thing is you've got it going.

There are a couple of service packs mentioned on the MS site.

Thanks MF.

A flight sim forum Australian member has also come up with some useful suggestions last night.

I have an Acceleration pack included and it appears service packs are included so hopefully that problem will be solved, he also advises I reinstall again to a separate harddrive, so I am going shopping, or at least to a C drive location and not the default installation offered.

Louise, I have uploaded acceleration disk and got to a multiplayer page as per picture.

The game its self is still multiplayer..

What was shut down was the online servers where you could log in a browse a large number of online hosted server games which you could join - It was kind of like a forum of game servers where you picked a game that appealed to you and joined in. Once in the game you met other people who were obviously interested in FS because they were flying it and so built up a group of contacts you could chat with in game.

You can host your own online game with flightsim where your computer will act as the game server, the only problem is finding people to join in.

When the online servers were closed down I lost interest in the game, I haven't even installed it on the last two computers and my flight yoke has managed to get lost during moving houses about 4 years ago and was never replaced

Vatsim is another option, but that it aimed at reality rather than idle banter so still not the same thing.
