I recently won a lot at an auction which included this old rebate plane. When i get time i will be restoring it for use, but I have no idea what brand or age it is, could someone please help?

I'm interested as it came as part of a lot which also included a nice record no. 4 1/2 and 5 planes and a nice stanley bailey no. 4, so just wondered if its just an old cheap-o rebate plane (which i suspect) or is it anything more valuable?

It's not the usual Record or Stanley and I think the Woden /WS version was more permanently branded. I'm guessing here, but as the only clue is EW (which I don't recognise) I think it might be an anonymous model which once had a retailer's name on.

Unusually, the thick part of the casting where you would expect to see a threaded hole for a fence rod is blank - so possibly this was a budget option with no fence or depth stop. The iron looks thick with plenty of length left, so it could be a good basic user.

I'd just get the paint spots off and lightly clean it with some thinned boiled linseed oil where the paint used to be.

Thanks Andy! It's pretty much what I thought, but thought I'd ask on the off chance that someone recognises it. It's not got many imperfections and once cleaned up and sharpened will be handy to have anyways.

I can't quite make it out in the photos, are the raised letters EW?

The casting looks old obviously but actually I think the extremely thick iron might be the best pointer to its age.

Whatever it is it sure looks to be a solid lump that will work well. Please post pics of it when you've cleaned it up!

Personally I think it is a rough patternmakers copy of an older model Stanley :?:

Cheers Andy

That would fit with the absence of fiddly extras such as the fence, depth stop and adjuster.

I don't think its recast - it's too different to a factory 78 for that, even in the body details. The handle is very different indeed, obviously.

So (by elimination) I guess its made from its own pattern, and cast, quite roughly.

I don't think a patternmaker made it for his own use - it's not "fine" enough.
