I guess the suspicion would be that the EU wants a pro-austerity Government, so heaven forbid the Greek people elect a Govt that they believe will preseve their benefits (early retirement, generous pensions, high Govt employment, relaxed tax collection etc). IIRC when a previous Greek prime minister wanted to let the people decide via a referendum he was promptly 'removed' from power.

Interesting times for Greece and the EU.

interesting is one word.

Stay in the euro, they have years of austerity ahead of them. Come out and they will have a worthless currency and hyper inflation.

Lose-lose...

marcos,

Very likely but I remember that Brazil went through a similar meltdown and simply refused to pay, ignored the debtors and kept going by fixing foreign exchange etc etc. So 3 yrs of austerity then an easing then OK seems a better way out than what the Germas's plan for them.

And how come Germany dictates how the EU works...I just don't get it. Was there a WW3 fought at some secret financial level and they won...huh!

That's the way these governments get elected in the first place? By promising stuff the country can't afford. We know tax evasion in Greece is endemic, so I don't think the Greeks are going to vote for austerity.

And when the present bail-out money is gone?????

Maybe they will do what Iceland did and have a referendum, ask the people "Should we pay the money back?" Wonder what that result would be?
