you certainly wouldn't bother priseing out the chippings - any remaining would be pushed out when you fitted the tenon.

He's not cutting a through-mortice; it's two separate mortices on adjacent faces that meet in the middle. Like you'd do for the rails/aprons in table legs, probably with the tenons mitred at 45deg?

I've never done it; read a book once
