I've just had a problem with a pop up virus that was showing pop up adverts whenever I clicked on anything at all. It had a web address as it opened a new window every time. I searched the web address and came up with http://pc-cleaner-pro-2013.en.softonic.com/ as a way to get rid of it.

This leads me to wonder whether PC Cleaner sent the virus out. However it did get rid of it and with some live one to one help from their crew I have transformed my computer. It's much faster and opens everything without delay. It cost me £37 but for a year I think it's money well spent.

I nuke my laptop every few months. It keeps everything fresh.
I have several backups of everything on a few external HDDs.

Only takes about an hour and its why my 6yo laptop is just as fast as newer machines.

It also helps that I'm running a "de-liced" version of win7.

I keep everything lean.

I used to Ben but lost a load of downloaded stuff when a computer crashed. I'm over the moon to say the least with this. Everything is ultra fast now. You don't realise how much it slows down as it does it gradually.

Add to that my computer shuts down properly when I close the lid. It's not done that for ages.

I do find conversations like these a little confusing.
I've been online for 15ish years, have downloaded terabytes of data from one place or another and have yet to be hit by malware/virus/Trojan etc.
Am I just lucky? Or is it the way I use the net?
I suppose there are 1,000s of people out there who have been infection free too and its only people who are/have been infected that post on the net so its difficult to tell how common it is.

Ben do you run anti virus software at all? What do you mean by 'nuke'?

I know exactly where this particular bug came from. I downloaded some software to allow me to watch soccer live online. Needless to say nothing comes for free and it would seem that this was in the bundle that came with it. There was other stuff too which was instantly visible and uninstalled easily enough. You may well have stuff running all the time that you are unaware of.

I use avast and have done for 15 years(or from whenever it was launched)
It's only the free one.
I've got access to all the paid versions but find avast does everything I need.

I regularly check running processes any question everything I'm unsure if.

Nuke is a fresh install. To wipe out all life and start from day one.

You'll find that the paid for versions find stuff that the free version doesn't. Is Nuke software or do you do it all manually?

I do it manually.
I call it nuking because that's what a nuclear bomb does, it wipes everything out.

I've used the paid (Mod Edit to retain post ,Rules) versions of all the top companies and found the free version of avast to be just as good and not as inturusive.

It's the way you use the net that keeps you clean.
