glueing onto oiled wood

I'm just finishing a bandsaw box and applied a 1st coat oil then realised I hadn't glued the handles on the drawers. Should I sand back the oil or can I just glue them on top? I will be using PVA glue.

I don't know if it will work, but how about using dowels, that way you will be through the finish.
