Gloss black

I want to raise the height of our TV slightly. The TV stand is glossy black plastic so I want to match this.
I have some tight grained beech and a spray can of gloss black; I assume cellulose.
What do you suggest I seal & undercoat the wood with?

Car primer has worked well for me in the past, even on a fairly open-grained wood. Should give a perfect finish on beech with minimal fuss.

My preferred brand is Hycote if it helps.
