Hi folks I am trying to get an old toro going so I can use it to build a flat bed sander but could do with some help please.

The motor is an old gryphon by brook motors ltd.

Model number c 605407

The motor is 240v

I think it is .25hp based on the label

Rating: cont.

Type:prot

The motor is free moving and buzzes when you ad power to it but the capacitor is a not working and has been pulled off.

Th capacitor has no markings so my questions are

What capacitor would I need

And is it worth investing in

Cheers

Jon

Brooks made high quality motors so if it isn't burned out it will surely be worth investing in.

Electricians have ways of figuring out the capacitor size for any sort of motor but as we run all motors on three phase in my workshop I have no clue about how they do it.

Does the motor run up to speed if you give the spindle a spin start by hand?

Do not leave power on it for too long without the motor spinning, the field windings will over heat from excessive current.

For a motor of that size a capacitor of 8- 10 mfd. and 450 volt working, Run rated should start it.

Does the motor have a centrifugal switch fitted ( behind the cooling fan on the opposite end to the shaft) if so check it is working freely against its springs and contacts are clean.

Warning: Make sure wiring insulation is sound and metal frame of motor is Earthed before handling with power applied.

Brooks are still going, look them up im sure they can tell you what capacitors to use.

ok tested the motor and will start and runs well with a push start

i take it that a 8 or 10 UF capacitor will do the job

cheers

Should be OK, most capacitors of this type have quite a broad tolerance on actual values.
