Hi Folks,
I wonder of you lovely people can help before I go lala lol

I have finally taken the plunge and bought a lathe, rather than do it sensibly I thought I would ravage fleabay for a cheapie to see if I really did/do want to take the full plunge. Having done this i have ended up with a NuTools GL1000G.

It runs nicely but the supplied chuck, despite assurances is no good. Having removed the chuck I have a threaded spindle left the appears to be 3/4 inch diameter and a thread that looks quite chunky in just under an inch there appears to be about 6 crests. Now having looked around it seems that the common thread patterns are 3/4 16tpi and 1inch 8tpi - is it possible that i have a 3/4 8tpi??? Have I done something wrong in my measuring? :? All I am looking for is a cheap chuck and a drive centre to get me started.

Any advice would be fantastic - before we start I think I have realised that buying better in the first place might have been wise!

Cheers Mark

Hi Mick, Thanks for this - yep I think this does sort it out! so 3/4 10tpi - can you get chucks/drives centres with that thread pattern?

He asked hopefully and full of prayer

Cheers
Mark

Hi

What chuck did you get with it - you can get inserts to convert chucks to fit a range of spindle threads. Does your chuck look like it has a threaded insert or is the thread cut directly into the chuck body?

Regards Mick

It looks as if the thread is cut straight into the metal rather than had any type insert involved i think. There is no makers name on it I will take a few piccies and post them if that would help. The only thing I can also say is that there are four pieces of metal that ~I believe are supposed to tighten against the wood (dovetails??) - there just seems to be some parts missing (in my humble and not being very helpful view!) Would piccies helps?

Thanks again M

Hi

Photos would definitely help - does the chuck have holes around it's edge, if so twisting the sections with holes in against each other should tighten the jaws and vice versa.

Regards Mick

right mate here goes with the piccies and as you can see no holes!!

Hi

Can't remember who made that chuck originally but Record Power 3000 is a clone of it. It looks like you have it assembled correctly - tightening the knurled ring should cause it to expand. These type of chucks have a very limited range, expanded to contrcted for each set of jaws.

If you got a face plate with the lathe you will probably find that more useful in the short term.

Drive centres just need to be the correct morse taper - this will probably be written on the lathe somewhere in the format - 1mt or 2mt

Regards Mick

Thanks Mick - you are a star!! Just had a look on the lathe and the chuck nothing with regards to MT1 or MT2, the central collar has a diameter of 1inch so will see if i can find out which (MT1 or MT2) is the best fit.

cheers

M

Hi

The drive centre fits inside the lathe spindle - if you have a 3/4" thread on your spindle then the morse taper will have to be 1mt, (2mt would not fit a 3/4" spindle) - I take it you have a hole in the spindle.

Regards Mick

if it helps I have a Tull lathe which looks the same but has a thread size of 3/4 x 8tpi and i could get no attachments or adapters to fit but I found that record have an adapters for 3/4 x 16tpi to 1inch x 16 tpi also other size treads and there was some on e-bay hope that helps.
Good luck win your turning

That looks like a craft supplies Precision Combination Chuck, actually quite a good chuck in it's day, it does have a few short comings but none too serious, I have one and used it for many years, although now it serves only to hold the buffing wheels.

What you have in the pics it the expanding collet set, you need a faceplate ring of the same size to be able to use it, plus the collets need to be held together with a doubled up elastic band or similar, plus there should also be two "C" spanners with it for tightening it up.

Hang onto it anyway, even if it's the record copy you never know when it might be handy!

If you have no hole for a MT then you have no choice but to use the chuck.
The chuck is not a bad one its just limited with the bits you have. there are a few other bits to go with it that incluse a screw chuck fitting, faceplate fittings and a pin chuck and other size collets too.
Have a search for record power rp3000 , robert sorby pcc and a craft supplies something, all the same thing.
my internet is playing up again but i will have a search and get back later if i can stay online.

Hi

OK - If the spindle is solid you're a bit stuffed regarding drive centres until you find a few more bits for your chuck or buy something else. All is not lost though if you have a face plate - do you?

If so you can mount a piece of MDF to it, turn it round, (to balance it), draw a few concentic rings on it in pencil, (to aid alignment), and you've made yourself a glue chuck. Glue work to it using hot melt glue and separate afterwards with a thin knife or length of wire.

Or you can screw the blank directly to the face plate and turn away - be careful not to hollow too deeply and hit the screws though.

I have the manual for the Record Power 3000 chuck which I could scan for you later in the week.

Regards Mick
