Hi everyone,

Can anyone help me, i have a stanley no. 3 with no adjustment screw for the brass wheel. It came to me that way, it was given to me so i couldn't say no to something free!.

Anyway, i have looked through ebay, amazon etc with no success. I know i can buy a kit with all the set screws etc but i only need the left hand threaded stud for the adjustment wheel. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

I found this one from a faithfull plane. I don't know if it's the same size thread though.

Maybe you know someone with a metalwork lathe who could make one for you?

Thanks for the reply Donald, i saw that a while back and thought my prayers where answered. But, with no success. I tried the brass adjustment nut on a friends faithfull no.4 plane and it wouldn't thread on easily to the stud. Different thread pitch, cut etc.... i have asked a few engineers who have suggested that it can be done, on a lathe or with a left hand die that has the correct pitch etc for cutting the thread. It's a bit of a ask for only one plane, if i had a few to do it would make more sense.

I am chasing up a lead in Sheffield, i will post if i find anything (it may help others who may have the same problem as i do)

Was working on the plane tonight, flattening the sole and general cleaning up to get it to a usable standard.

no worries steve,

i have looked a buying plane parts on ebay, at the minute there aren't many to choose from. If i bought another plane, to use as a donor it probably would be better than the one i am trying to restore. Therefore, another plane to add to the collection, i can't justify another one.lol

I got this no3 stanley given to me, it's not an old one but i think it's worth getting it working.

I did get my hands on a new stanley frog from a tool shop, the adjustment stud was not easy to remove. It was a brand new frog, tried to remove it with cutting a slot in the end with a hacksaw, did not work. Ended up welding a nut onto the end and it eventually came loose with a spanner. Although, i put too much heat into the stud and it ain't straight no more. so it wouldn't thread properly, i did not not want to wreck the brass adjuster.

so i await any more tips or advise

many thanks for the offer Vann, but i couldn't ask you to do that. I will wait and see if this place in Sheffield can help me out. If it all doesn't work out i will be getting in contact with you. thankyou so much
 
You can still use the plane, it's just that you will not have screw adjustment for the blade depth.

Loosen the lever cap by flipping up the little lever about halfway, then use use a mallet to tap the blade down, do up the lever and try it etc.

How new do you think it is? Stanley changed to metric threads at some point (1990s or 2000s). I assume the left hand threaded rod was also metricated.

I don't have any Stanleys that new. Chances are yours isn't that new either - but a photo or two might help to be sure. The original thread was 9/32" 24tpi (if you have an imperial thread gauge).

If it's any use to you I have this one which I am sure came from an old No.4

The diameter is show...1 1/4" and it's yours if you want it.
