this is something i'm making in college. it's made from 1.5mm birch ply skins seperated by a 15mm thick frame. the black inlays are carbon fibre. a place to put a hot drink without ruining my lovely oil finish.

some pics of the frame. frames are pine and purpleheart. the core is epp foam.

Interesting design, sort of torsion box with foam filler. I also like the carbon fibre detail. How rigid are the panels made this way?

I like the carbon fibre part, is that the folie you are using??

Only a youngster could come up with that (you have to go with your time i gues  ) also like the lite colour

what is the reason behind the folding part??

the panels are quite strong. the top section is 1456mm and it flexes about 10mm up and down if i lean fully with my elbows. this is just a prototype and could be made stiffer quite easily. i like a bit of flex in a desk and this is just right for me. i'm pretty impressed as a sheet of birch ply the same thickness flexes much more and weighs much much more. the table weighs about 14kg atm including hinges.

the carbon fibre is real cloth and epoxy lay-up. its 1.5mm thick so the same as the ply. will take 1000 degrees. should be fine for tea.

it folds because the starting point for the brief was a trestle table. the (imaginary) client is portugese architect Alvaro Siza. it is intended as a second desk when it all gets too much. the hole is for charger cables, laptop, phone etc.
