When I was in Berlin last week I popped into Dieter Schmid's tool shop and got one of these fishtail paring chisels:

https://www.fine-tools.com/fishtail-paring-chisel.html

I used it for the first time yesterday to clean out some half lap dovetail sockets and it worked a treat. I particularly like the flats on the handle as they help with optimal holding. There's a set of three but given that they seem to be principally for cleaning out the corners of sockets I only got the smallest one. I'm sure somebody will be able to offer good reasons for having the two larger sizes.

Disclaimer: I have no connection with Dieter Schmid other than having spent too much money there over the years.

When subscribing to Cosman a few years ago (until I got fed-up with his slow and boring work) I won one of these chisels in his monthly draw. It's a super tool as Andy says but it cost me £20 in import and Royal Mail handling charges so I didn't gain much!!
