Hi, Looking to get my first lathe and it seems to be down to 2 that are in my budget and the size I'd like.

Which do you think would be better: Record Power CL3 or Axminster Hobby Series AWVSL1000?
Or is there something else you would recommend?

Thanks

I've got the Axminster AWVSL900 and I would say go for the record power. I'm upgrading now and it's not because of that, I just think the record power is slightly better in the build quality.

Never used either, but whatever your budget I would say DEFINITELY visit other local turners and/or local club and take on board their (almost certainly) friendly input - will save you money and time in the long run.

I have the AWVSL 1000 which I have just bought 2nd hand, I am very pleased with it, having said that I have upgraded from the old M900 which is only ½ hp as apposed to the 1000 which is 1hp.
I would recommend spending time with other turners etc to get the info you need in choosing.
If this is your first lathe I'd recommend starting with a hobby series lathe and if you really like it and have gained confidence then you can always upgrade.

I would recommend buying the lathe with the biggest capacity, your budget can stretch to. You can always turn small stuff on a big lathe, but not big stuff on a small lathe. Once you get the hang of turning you will always want to push the envelope so to speak.

I would love to be able to visit and talk with someone that does woodturning. Have found a club locally, but due to problems with mobility and living alone I am pretty much house-bound unless I can get someone to go with me.
So am limited to watching videos and reading post from people like you to learn what I can and make decisions.
Thank you for your help.
