Hi all

Can anyone recommend a good finish for oak? I don't want to tint it any more than I have to, just bring out the grain and protect the wood. I could just wax it, but I was thinking about making my oil debut.

oil will darken it. try some cooking oil (veg/sunflower/olive, whatever you have) on an offcut. I wouldn't recommend using it on the real thing, but you will get a good idea of what boiled linseed oil or danish oil will do to it, without having to buy anything first. I like oiled oak, it really brings it to life.

I use Chestnut brand wax on my Oak and gives a lovely silky finish without changing the colour

My favourite finish is renaissance wax, it gives a stunning finish. But if you really want to try an oil finish I have used finishing oil, I think it is by chestnut. It is similar to Danish oil but much lighter and doesn't darken the wood like Danish oil does
