I am planning to have a play with some flamed maple veneer, and am likely to use hide glue.

i have 2 experiments that i want to try out in terms of finish- firstly tinting oil, and secondly staining, sanding back and then staining with a lighter colour.

i have only done a but of hammer veneering, and am probably a bit liberal with the glue on top when doing it. i can scrape the surface afterwards, or sand it, but will the hide glue cause me problems with staining or with oiling the top? i know that pva shows up really badly if there are any spots missed when it is wiped off.

And a second question. Transtint dyes look great, but arent available over here. Hammerl from Germany are said to be a good alternative, but shipping is a fortune, and they are not available here. Any other "complex metallic dyes" available in the UK? Are those designed for leather and textiles the same beast? Are all created equal?

Thanks Roger. What I have actually found, and hadnt reported back is that the hide glue doesnt penetrate the timber, so that when sanded/scraped off, it is gone and the wood takes the stain. great stuff.

Veneering with hide glue is deliciously mucky! Mind you, LOML has never forgiven me for using her iron. Perhaps I should have told her before she did the sheets ?
