Finish for percussion musical instrument

Can anybody reommend a finish for a percussion musical instrument; just basically wooden clappers. The wood should be very hard but I've only used a reddish wood that's not all that hard, I think it's sapele.
So what I'm looking for is a varnish or oil type finish that would harden the wood.

Hard wax oil from Chestnut or Osmo. Brush on, wipe off. Easy to use and very tough.
