Hi guys just got the festool 1010 1/4 router................lovely jabbly! no dust and powerful for it size. Only thing is my regular bits are to short or seem to be. Do the festoo dol 1/4 bits with a longer shank. The problem is because you get the dust cap, lining the bit up with a pencil mark becomes almost impossible and when you plunge it down you then cant see the bit at all. Anyone any suggestions, same problem?

Not much in the way of answers I'm afraid. I have had the same problem with my 1010 though. The only thing I do is pop off the top of the transparent dust enclosure for lining up; and then pop the top back on. Although neither off nor on are easy; getting the top in the correct orientation is tricky.

I don't think I fully understand the issue? You don't need longer shanked bits - but I do pop of the dust shroud if need be. Dust collection is still pretty good without it.

It's my go to router - I use it all the time.

If you need a longer router bit then step up to the 8mm shank rather than 1/4", the 1010 takes both. I wouldn't buy Festool router bits, try Wealdon for good quality at a fair price. Apart from some minute 0.5mm bits that I use for inlaying, all my 1010 bits are 8mm, they're just that shade more robust and therefore accurate.

Incidentally, if the problem is adjusting the fence to get the bit on a pencil line, then you really want to do that without the transparent dust shroud on, the final job is to set plunge depth. For many bits you can remove and replace the transparent shroud with the bit in place although you may need to raise the bit, which is why you set the plunge depth last!

cheers guys, i will try lining up without the dust cap, my router came with 2 8mm collets and they sent me a 1/4 so you saying go back to the 8mm, fair play
