very sad to hear.

I think that most of what you see are a raised air intake.

That is sad. The periscopes coming from the bonnet of 4x4's replace the normal engine air intake for fording streams and the like. 4x4 devotees may also fit exhaust snorkels - but you don't see these too often. A tragic accident.

I do a lot of off-roading and I've never seen a car with a raised exhaust. I have a raised air intake (snorkel) and have driven through a lot of water in my time and the pressure from the engine forces the exhaust gases out and there is no need for a exhaust snorkel (I've never even heard of such a thing). Still a sad accident though.

sad story

never seen the need , but have seen it done
i have been close to top of window in disco without exhaust snorkel

Claymore, if it's online, could you please post a link to the story? I did Google it a bit -- some horror stories about thieves in France using exhaust fumes deliberately to rob people sleeping in caravans, but nothing about pets dying on long trips.

I had a long wheelbase Landrover for many years, latterly with a Discovery engine in it. Snorkels are air intakes - exhausts on wading 4x4s don't need to be on 'periscopes', and aren't (at least I've never seen nor heard of one).

PS: have been to Galloway ourselves on holiday - you live in a beautiful place, and the night sky there is just wonderful!

Erik it was in a newspaper not online (that i know of, but will try and find it) it was definitely a long pipe from the exhaust running up along a ladder to a roof rack/framework, it also had a pipe near the front bonnet for breathing?
Aye its lovely up here and zero crime so nice and peaceful  great place for stargazing thanks to lack of street lights etc
Cheers
