...... or even just the tune, that you've been desperate to identify for years and years, and it's driving you crazy?

Well I have! I can hum 1 little bit of the chorus, and that's it. I don't know any of the lyrics, or even the genre!!!

Or at least that was the case until a couple of nights ago. I was in the bath listening to a rock station on DAB radio and 'my' tune came on!!!!

I couldn't believe it, after all these years! Typically, the station wasn't broadcasting the names/titles etc, so I tried to memorize what I could from the lyrics I could understand.

Got out of the bath, ran to the PC to type them into Google, and BINGO!!!!! Up it popped in the search results, then over to Youtube,

downloaded it and added to the collection. Result!

OOPS

Robert Plant... 29 Palms

The only bit I could hum was....

Ah Ah Ah,
Ah Ah Ah,
Ah Ah Ah Ah Ah Ah Ah Ah.

I get that a lot, a few weeks ago my sister went to see The Wonder Stuff in concert so I kept getting size of a cow stuck in a loop.

My Digital thingy usually displays the song title and artist on the display.

Very frustrating!

Birmingham library used to run a service, back in the 70s, long before digital music, Shazam etc, where you could phone up and sing a bit of a tune to the specialist music librarians, who would do their best to identify it for you. Happy days!

Sound hound is an app that does a similar thing.
You play it a few seconds of a song or sing a song and it will search the internet for the answer.

It's helped me a few times.

For classical music you can't beat Denys Parson's Directory of Tunes and Musical Themes. No classical musical knowledge needed. Only the ability to decide if the following note is Down, Up or Repeat.

So the opening chords of Beethoven's Fifth.is dah dah dah dah

or *RRDUR RDURR DURRD and then you simply look it up in his directory ...et volia, Beet 5th 1st movement 1st theme.

Ha ha, I'm a fool.

I'm humming rrdur rdurr durrd and thinking " I don't know that tune"

That will teach me for skimming the post.

I had a relative who, when in a drunken stupor, used to sing the following:-
I've got a ping pong ping pong ball,
I've got a ping pong ping pong ball,
I've got a ping pong ping pong ball,
IIIIIIIII've got a ping pong ball.
I've got a ping pong ping pong ping pong ping pong ball, .......................

I'm sure you can name that tune......

That's almost the same pattern of 'Ahs' as Jingle Bells! (As far as Oh what fun!)
