Just picked up one of these, and the wheel which sets the amount of set has (illegible) numbers around its edge. Are these recommendations for different tpi, or simply I apply the amount of set I want and then remember the number for next time?

My Eclipse saw set gives far too much set if I follow the markings.Andy T describes what you need to do.

Thanks both - I'd guessed so, but it was worth asking before I start bending teeth.

Do you mean Eclipse 77 saw set?
I start at about the 11 1/2 mark, on the basis that I can add set, for bigger teeth, but not remove set. (Easily)
There are two types, thick plunger, or thin plunger, the number 77 is the same for both. Thin plunger is better for tenon saws.
I have a set of instructions for these, even Eclipse, offer, the number is equal to the amount of teeth, next page states the number are only reference points!
Follow the old rule, only just enough set for the saw/job.
