I expect they are out of stock, so the seller has increased the price rather than delete the listing -or a typo.

They have added a couple of 1's to the price as it's most likely gone out of stock. The purchase history shows a price of £8.49 for their recent sales.

It's common practice, but people usually add a couple of 0's rather than do it that way, from what I've seen.

Well I saw a a second hand Lie Nielsen plane sell for more than a new one plus shipping which is kind of annoying. The other school of thought is its for the purposes of laundering money.

Nothing at all sinister about this type of practice. As stated above, he is almost certainly out of stock and by increasing his price so much that no one will buy he retains his sales quantity for that listing. If he ends the listing then his sales quantity has to start again when he re-lists the item.

For business sellers who have good sales for a listing, eBay give them preferential treatment in search results.

I used to do it regularly when I was working.

I think from personal experience that ebay IS full of chancers tools always listed and some sell for way more than can be bought elsewhere.

I saw a dewalt biscuit jointer go for over £900 ???????

Yep out of stock. Easier to put a daft price on, rather than change the ad. Then if someone actually does buy one at the silly price they'll get out on their bikes until they've tracked one down!
Knowing woodworkers I bet they do sell a few at the high price - people routinely buy Honerite and all sorts of silly stuff at very silly prices.
Had to laugh at the ad: "HoneRite #1 can also be used to revive old clogged oil stones by soaking the stone and scrubbing with an old brush to remove debris from the pores of the stone" as if you would at £60 a litre! Cheaper to use a good single malt whisky and just as effective.

PS I should add - the best way to revive an old stone is to rub it down a bit with a 3M Diapad or similar, and a bit of white spirit.

I got fed up with auctioning stuff on eBay and getting next to nothing. Most of the things I sell are unlikely to attract multiple bidders as they're usually very specialised items so now I use BIN at the price I want. If it doesn't sell then it goes back on the shelf.

I've bought two cars and a van from ebay that have been incredibly good value. I also missed out on two auctions of woodwork machinery that I am sure would have been excellent buys. There are tell tail signs for a good ebayer/seller.... If they make a big effort with photos and have a genuine description listing all defects and plus points, if they have 100% feedback with lots of sales in the last 12 months........ BUY IT!!!!
