I have just bought a trend micro, i need to get to grips with dust and chip extraction before i start turning, my shed is quite small and both will be a problem, do people extract both? i would like to have chip extraction just for tidiness and dust is obviously a real concern, do i need to buy 2 machines or is there a good one that can do both?

can people let me know what there setups are?

I don't bother with chip extraction during turning, I use dust extraction whilst sanding, more importantly I wear an aircap 3 to protect face and lungs. I have so many chips whilst turning I usually just shovel them up when finished. A HVLP extractor will cover both chip and dust with a hood near the lathe. Are you in a workshop or the house?

I would get a chip extractor with a good length of hose and place the outlet near whatever I am working on, simple to make a stand and hood, cheap easy and effective for most tasks and to clean the floor when finished.
Best of luck,

Personally I wear a visor and mask at all times turning and just generate the mess. If I ever see a truly effective extraction method for a lathe I might investigate it, but I've not seen one yet.
