I have just returned from my local car boot sale with a Draper 240v hand plane, plugged it in and it works fine.
Just one thing, it has a lever that you can push or pull on the front left side and can not see what it dose.
I only paid £3 for it and was pleasantly surprised it worked.
 
It sounds like the rebate stop, combined with a side fence it determines the size of a rebate that you can make
unless that's completely wrong and it just adjusts the chip ejection left or right

Sounds like the chip ejection port to me. If it has an outlet both sides of the plane? Then it definitely is that. ;)
 
Sounds like a good buy. I picked up a used Erbauer one, and was well impressed- once I'd put new blades on it.
