i'm about to get a laptop (finally) and this seems to be a good option.
i was wondering if anyone has on of these and how they've found it
thanks

I dont own one of these but a friend got one just before xmas , he is pleased with it but the vista runs so slow , i recomended he upgrade the memory , but as its new he dont want to open it up (putting new memory in is so easy )

To run windows vista a laptop needs to be running at least 2gb of memory or it just runs slow

You could get one with XP fitted this would solve the problem

I have an Acer notebook after it was recomended and i have been very pleased with it , 2gb memory and using XP , this seems to work well for me

Im no wizkid when it comes to pc,s but i would sugest you have a good shop around as there seems to be so many deals around at the moment
:D :D

Grant - are you dead set on a PC PC?

Have you considered a MacBook laptop - which can also run Windows (if you're that desperate  )

Dell build quality is maybe 50% that of a Mac. I take my old (4 years) G4 Powerbook into school every day, connect up to Smartboard, use it in my office, at home (typing this on it), take it to France 6 times a year, drop it (many times) and it absorbs it all. It looks good, has a better screen and accesses some superb software from the iLife and iWork suites - even Office for the Mac is better!

Until I recently retired I'd been in IT support the last 20 years for part of the Civil Service with part of the responsibility including the procurement and support of PC hardware.

We bought hundreds of notebooks over the years and have found Dell the best and they are the manufacturer of choice. We had fewer problems with their kit (desktops and notebooks) and they also have the advantage of decent technical support.

In fact, SWMBO and I have just ordered a new notebook for ourselves (spending our own money fon computers for a change) and have gone for an Inspiron 1720.

I can't sensibly comment on Roger's suggestion of a Mac. In my experience they were only used by DTP and Multimedia specialists who absolutely loved them.

In the end it comes down to what you want to use it for, what software you are used to and how much you want to spend. Of course you could install Linux on the machine (Dell support Ubuntu Linux) where all of the software is free but you do need to be at least a bit techy to use it effectively.

Yep, I had one and was very happy - my wife now has it (I moved to a Toshibe Tablet/Notebook) and is equally pleased.

I've not had that particular model but have had 4 Dell laptops over the years and used loads of Dell desktops.

I would be happy to recommend them as very good machines.

Both my Son and Father-in-law have the inspiron 1300 and on both the wireless conection failed after a short while, other than that theres no other problems.
I myself had to get a new one this Christmas and opted for the Acer 7520, it seemed I got a lot more for the Money, Dell used to be very good on price but seem to be on par or a little more expensive than other manufacturers now,

thanks for the great replies guys
Roger, i hadn't considered a mac but as i know nothing about them and have used windows exclusively, i automatically preferred the pc (i'm not very computer savvy so the thought of having to learn the ins and outs of a new system is daunting even though i know you can run windows on it)

i had also heard good things about the acer so will look into that option again

it's very confusing with all the options available, guess i'll just have to take the plunge
thanks again

My daughters have a dell laptop each, both running vista. Personally I am not a fan of vista, but they both run it very well and seem very good machines. The Dell after sale service does seem very good.

If I was going to buy a new laptop for myself I would definitely buy a macbook, they look and perform amazingly.
