A small gift for a good friend (John) having a 40th birthday party on saturday
Ebony mitred base with mahogany base, lemonheart lining, red baize
Holly lid with ebony rim & lemonheart inlay with a pink ivory 'J' inlaid. One corner swivels on a 5mm bar, with 2 magnets to close in the opposite diagonal
The chain was done by drilling 3mm holes with a lip&spur bit ( a small Festool bit from the 2007 Centrotec box), and then hammering a small cut off through the LN dowel plate
Finished with 2 coats Fiddes hard wax oil then Liberon Black Bison clear fine paste wax

Very nice! I especially like the swivel lid and magnet closures.

Just a note from my own experience, you can set the magnets deeper and put a couple of mm of wood plug over them and they still work fine. Pull is reduced of course, but not a vast amount, just use a more powerful (bigger) magnet.
