thinking of buying a couple of crown cryo razor edge chisels, thought on theses please? also i am sharpening on a pro edge, I only have HSS chisels at the moment and sharpen all them on a proedge with 180 ceramic belt? would i need to change belt to a finer 1 (240grit) any help appreciated

Sometimes cryo treatment is 'sold' as an almost magic treat-all but, as I understand it metallurgists view its application as much more limited with benefits only in certain narrow applications. Basically quenching 'freezes' the hard structure of a white hot steel, and tempering modifies that to give a hard, but not so brittle structure (ferrites, martensites etc in a different balance) these both finish off at room temperature, whereas cryo treatment can take them down further to well below -100C for a period of time, using liquid nitrogen or argon, supposedly further stabilising structure, I believe.
I don't remember from my dealing with special steels whether it should have much benefit for M42, one of the higher Cobalt HSSs but I do think that M42 should have several advantages over the standard M2, M4 often used for such HSS tools - and if the M42 were HIPped PM, this would further benefit its edge and other properties, maybe much more than being cryo treated.
Any specialist HSS metallurgists out there?

Im no meta... but trust the likes of Richard Findley, who told me he is very pleased with edge holding on his. If you call Crown, talk to Edward and he'll explain pros and cons of each steel. And also guarantee satisfaction.

tried Tayolors webb site, they are out of stock at the moment .dam
They must be selling well - they had stock in only a few weeks ago.
I think TaylorsMirfield are moving to new premises, so, in the upheaval of that , they have let quite a lot of their stock items run down. I’m sure Dan will be building up the stock in the near future, and providing the usual great service.

I recently bought a standard (none m42) cryo crown bowl gouge at a great price from toolman.co.uk . I haven’t used it much but so far I haven’t noticed any difference in sharpening or edge keeping over the other none cryo crown gouges I have. I must admit I’m not a fan of the black handle, it’s fine but just looks cheap in my view. I suspect the m42 will probably give the biggest gain rather than the cryo treatment.
