I have a couple of counter sinks and two sets of counter-sink-bore-drills. They are generally speaking c**p. They were not particularly expensive so maybe that's the issue (one lot Disston the other Kwick-Screw-Save-Fix). Does anyone make these things which actually work or are they just a c**p idea. Or do they just work once or twice and then need sharpening, or wot? Additionally, should they only be used in a drill press or is there any other way of not snapping the b****y drill off every three holes?

i have a couple of the axminster anti chatter countersinks that i have had no issue with, in the drill press or handheld. Never done any proper counterboring though.

Cheers Marcros, I've not tried that type, probably worth a punt. Just need to see if I can glue a drill onto the pointy bit!

They do snap easily, you've got to keep the drill dead straight. Any movement while your drilling and they snap.

I use the hollow shell type ones in wood - they work well.
Think I bought them from Axy?

The counterbore ones are always a bit of a problem with drills slipping and breaking - I bought a set of cheap drills from Axy too so plenty of replacements.
I've got a LV, an Axy and a Trend set - don't think any one is better?

i bought the makita reversible set, which for the job in mainly softwood that i was doing and the fact that i only had one drill made my work very easy it takes seconds to switch from drill with countersink to any bit you want. i did break one drill bit but there easy to replace.

edit: ebay item 400509165203 i don't remember mine being that expensive! only bought it a year ago, but you get the idea.

Best way to stop them slipping is to grind a little flat pion on them for the locking screw so sit against.
