What is this please, it looks important. I have never used it, I do have a windows7 pro disk so do I need to use it?

If so, please advise me how.

Thanks DM65. As mentioned I have never backed up, even in 15 years, perhaps never using my computer for business or personal finance I am not to concerned on files lost.
Anyway I will spend sometime tomorrow and see what happens, I believe I have over 30000 files so I suppose it will take some time to be backed up?

There are lots of backup strategies and you need to chose one. Think about what you want to recover from. A computer that won't boot ? A lost file. Stolen computer ?

If you are able to recover the os from a system restore disc then you can get a working system again. Then if you have a backup of your personal files you can restore them.

I use Linux and it's easy to separate the OS files from my user files. I take a copy of the os partition so I can get a bootable computer straight away. Then I can copy back any important files.

What I am saying is that you might not want to backup everything at once and not everything each time.

Thanks for that link and info.

I have an external harddrive and I am always sending it stuff in addition to the pc I want secured incase, so looks like I do not need back up.

Don't forget external drives fail as well.

Have several PCs and laptops for me and the family. All the data (photos and letter etc etc) are stored on a RAID system externally on what is known as a NAS or Network Attached Storage . The RAID system has 4 hard discs running RAID 10 which means that it is fast and can also cope with any of the HD failing with no data loss but is seen just as a single shared location. All the computers have their "My Documents" redirected to the NAS so all files are accessible from all computers.

Acronis True Image software - this creates an image of my PC main disk with all the software and operating system installations and updates it once a week. If the main disc fails I can recreate the whole system as it was onto a brand new disc. This image file is written to an external disc and onto my NAS so I have two copies in case of failure.

My data files are also copied from the NAS to the external disc as backups using Acronis again so I have two copies.

My final stage is that every year I create DVD back ups of all the years data - mainly photos and music but all data really.

It was a bit of an effort to do this and there is a cost for the NAS but I have a very flexible easy to use and secure system now.
