Shwmae.
I'm new here and to woodturning and was looking for a bit of advice from you kind people.
I've got a Perform CCSL, and wanted to purchase a chuck for it.
I've been looking at the Patriot chuck from Robert Sorby but was wondering if a chuck can be to "heavy" for a lathe?
Would this be a suitable purchase for my lathe?
Thanks for your time.

S'mae hefyd :) Dw i'n dysgu Cymraeg, ond dw i ddim yn rhygl.

I didn't think the Patriot chuck was all *that* heavy. In general most woodturning chucks will work on most woodturning lathes that they will physically fit on to and the weight of the chuck is not usually a consideration. Having said that, heavier chucks are usually larger (and sometimes longer) so if you have a mini lathe with a short bed a large long chuck will take up a lot of your turning length, which you may not want.

They are good chucks and will be Ok on your lathe but another chuck to consider is the Axminster K10 and it is a lot cheaper and in my opinion they have a larger and more useful selection of jaws

I think I`d go with the K10 chuck to,we used them at our club before it folded, very reliable not to heavy and good jaw selection to,regards,

Eric.

Thanks for the info folks, really appreciated.
I'll probably be pestering you all with questions regularly..........sorry in advance :D

I have a Patriot chuck and I can only say it is a beautifully engineered piece of kit, but to be fair, I have no point of reference as it is the only chuck I have used so far.

I own The k10 along with the versa chuck also the dreaded supernova 2 like woody says the K10 is good value and odonnel jaws are good but another point id like to add is the versa chuck will take axminster jaws also if you purchase the carriers with it and it too is value for money . Its really a game of Choice and versatility. I found a downside with supernova Jaws that being The Large gripper jaws are not as.good As id Expect they didn't perform well and i was forever losing large vases out of the chuck ,as woody knows .
Regards
Bill

Thanks again for the information guys.
Think I'll be getting the K10, more my budget............hope Santa is good to me this year
