But beware.
The road tax date is INACCURATE.
I've spoken to DVLA about this but they don't have a good answer. My car is shown as being taxed until Oct 2016. In fact, the tax runs out at the end of March. It seems to be tied in with the direct debit option that they provide. If you sign up for this (and my advice is DON'T because I did and it has caused nothing but heartache) then beware :
1) As I mentioned above, the Taxed Until date for your car will be wrong.
2) The PDF mandate that they send to you to inform you of the direct debit being due will NOT necessarily have the date that you would expect..ie the 1st of the relevant month. I got one on Friday and it said the DD would go out on April 5th. With all the talk about scams and phishing, that 5th April gave me pause for thought - do I start to worry. If it is a scam then how the hell did they get my bank account details (shown on the PDF) and tie that in with my car registration (also shown on the PDF) ?
I checked the Long Headers on the email and there was nothing to show that it came from any Government mail server. OK - permission to start panicking granted.
I tried calling DVLA. The recorded message was very helpful "We're busy. Goodbye"
What else?
Oh yes....if you want to SORN a vehicle using their telephone system then be very very careful. You go through all the prompts, giving the 11 digit code, they reply with the registration number, is this correct etc. You say 'Yes' expecting the next stages to ask 'From what date would you like to SORN' - perfectly logical, you might assume. You assume wrong. The next message is "You have now SORNed your vehicle. You must not use it on the road". WTF ? I still have two weeks to run to the end of the month and I've paid the road tax. Cue call to DVLA and conversation with Pedantic Little Prat........
And yes, the email was from DVLA and no, he couldn't explain why the Taxed Until date was wrong. Was he bothered ? Nope. And no, he couldn't explain why the direct debit date was 5th April.....oh wait a minute, he did say it was the first working day after the Bank Holiday. Makes sense, eh? only the Easter Bank Holiday is the week before!
So, be warned !!
