Lidl have the open end spanner sets 6mm - 20mm +22mm for £4.99. They are made to DIN3110, and I've just check a few with a verynear gauge, and they are are very accurately sized.

Do you by chance mean that Lidl have cheap spanners (rather than gauges) for sale that you checked with a vernier gauge.

I am most intrigued by the notion of a verynear gauge as an accurate measuring tool! :)

(Sorry about that Phil, I just couldn't resit!) :D

One best forgotten, one dig-in and you are in for a nasty experience.

There's a reason for removing the points from callipers used on rotating spindles.

I've used old spanners for the same purpose as Phil. Let's hope it doesn't start an argument about metric/sae/whitworth

I use spanners with one jaw sharpened a lot for work that needs reasonably accurate spindle measurements. If used like a parting tool e.g. lowered onto the wood after taking it down to a few mill bigger than required it is a very quick and easy way to get accurate spindles. Never had a catch yet. When you have to make 50 tapestry spindles with specific dimensions on each one makes a huge difference in time spent.
