Hello all - new member here.

I have a ten-year old Record Power CL-1 which I have upgraded with a variable speed system from Haydock Converters. I'm very happy with the lathe but lately I have been having trouble with the belt tensioner handle/bolt which is difficult to tighten because it is almost out of the end of the slot it runs in.

Presumably this is because the drive belt has stretched?

I have ordered a new drive belt. I didn't get a manual with the lathe when I bought it and there isn't one available for download from Record Power; I'd be grateful if someone familiar with the CL-1 could talk me through the procedure for changing the belt. I fitted the variable speed upgrade kit myself so I'm reasonably familiar with the workings.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks. Snainton Woodworking is the company I've ordered the drive belt from.

I found a procedure on the Record Power website for changing the belt on a DML lathe. Looking at my lathe, I think the procedure is the same - the spindle shaft runs in a rear and a front bearing and is secured at the rear of the headstock by an allen bolt. I need to remove the allen bolt, slacken the grub screws on the pulley and then (gently!) drive the shaft out through the front of the headstock with a mallet and a brass bar far enough to replace the belt.

Many thanks for the replies.

Yes, that's what I gathered on pages 9, and 10 on the link.
Keep in touch, and let us know how it all proceeds.

The manual you linked to is great. The DML lathes are very similar to the CL-1.

The belt will be delayed by the New Year holidays - I'll let you know how I get on when it arrives. Feeling much more comfortable about the procedure now.

Might it be worth putting a tiny drop of penetrating oil on the joint of the spindle and pulley now so it has a chance to work its magic between now and the new belt arriving? I've not tried shifting mine but suspect it may prove slightly reluctant :)
