a little while ago before most of the b&q shop refits they also changed their tag line from

"B&Q You can do it" to

"B&Q Let's do it"

Apparently it was a marketing thing for femanising the brand...more soft furnishings etc....as most "apparently" of the diy decisions around the house are made by the women, they chose what to do and where to do it...what colour etc.............

Shame that Home Depot didn't take them over. The Home Depot stores I have been to in the US put anything we have to shame. They have a very broad range of stock, including very unusual specialist items.

But I couldn't find a bit of softwood the right size for bracing the workbench despite all that.......

Cheers, Paul. :D

Don't B&Q own Screwfix?
Yes I spoke to a Screwfix employee who says thats why they recommend B&Q to customers when they (Screwfix) don`t have an item in stock

I couldn't get a steel ruler when I was in B & Q around a month ago, mind you I could not get what I want from the other DIY store Focus either.

I thought it odd at the time but reading above I can now see some daylight through the trees.

PS we have got a massive B&Q building being erected at the moment in Torbay, been years in the town with a little shop and now this news comes about.

They sell Hardwood!

I work at B&Q and we haven't been told of any changes happening yet. maybe it will come soon. hope not though otherwise my staff discount will be useless!!!!

I noted with interest that you can now book a Handyman service from B&Q - for anything between 1 hour and a day. From £60 (1 hour) to £280 (8 hours). Light sockets changed, worktops fitted, painting etc.

This may be related to their potential move away from DIY - ie get someone else to do it.

Cheers

Karl

The B&Q in Peterborough is brand new on a new site (only been open about 6 weeks I think). One end they have built a large new wood store with dedicated checkout and "trade" collection area. It's got the biggest selection of timber of any DIY store I've seen for a long time. Seems unlikely they would do this if policy was to change to a make over store.

Unfortunately Homebase Huntingdon is my nearest DIY store but I find myself walking in the door thinking "why did I come here they probably won't have what I need". They are great if you want an illuminated santa or a bathmat but not it you are looking for something like a range of brass screws. Why do they have four hangers full of screws all the same size instead of four different ones? Focus is slightly better but not by a huge margin.

I think I looked at some of the Straighwood some time ago and nearly bought some before I realised that, if I remember correctly, it was basically a number of shorter pieces end jointed together presumably to try and make it more stable and less prone to distortion.

No that's to save wastage. I have a glass top table from Ikea that uses 5 different bits to make a three foot length! Seems ok for strength as it's a comb joint (I think that's what they call it). Joint is probably stronger than the wood. No problem if it's going to be painted.

If you don't like it have a rummage - typically only one or two bits will be like that and the rest will be one piece.

The B&Q I use up in Farnborough has also been refitted. Their stocks of electrical and plumbing items are now less than half of what they used to carry. The hardware section has been decimated, too. But there's now a huge kitchen and bath showroom and lots of furniture! The lighting section has grown - and they actually sell LED bulbs, but only in GU10 bases so far. Strangely, MFI are next door, along with Furniture World, Sofa World and similar.

Ah well, at least we still have a couple of large local suppliers and the guys who work in them know what they're talking about.

Q: Why would anyone buy wood from B&Q? It's more expensive than anywhere else I know of, and the quality is rubbish...

Does anyone actually buy LED lamps and what do they use them for? As far as I'm aware they are not yet bright enough for general illumination and can only be used for secondary lighting. I wonder what percentage purchased are actually used more than once?
