Can someone point me to info' on how to do cappings?

Inlays', can a veneer be placed on and sanded to look like it's an Inlay?

I'm thinking of project in Walnut with Rosewood cappings and a Maple veneer/inlay

Hi Ray...what are you making?

If the capping is the edge of say a table top, I tend to use Baltic Birch for the veneered panel, and the solid wood edges are attached via a tongue and groove. Tongue on the ply and the groove in the solid capping--edges.

The capping's groove is made so that the veneered ply is ever so slightly below the top of the capping, which is planed down to the level of the veneer and the whole sanded flush.

The field of the top, being that it is flush with the capping, looks like it was inlayed.

Of course, the above depends on what it is you are making--as well if we are even talking about the same process. Sorry if it didn't apply.

Take care, Mike

Thanks for the info' Mike.

My projects are Air Rifle stocks I've only made two, but enjoying it.

I started by carving add on pieces for stocks. Then I made a full one

This was my first full Stock.

I'm on with another just waiting for my dyes and glue to arrive.

I'm thinking of doing a Wallut one next with Maple inlays or veneers laid on.

Maybe I'm being too ambitious.
