Hi all,
The accompanying photo is, as you will all know of course, a drill-brace, in this case a Millers Falls No 182. It is two tools in one, a breast drill and with the removal of the cranked gear wheel it becomes a common brace.
An article in The Fine Tool Journal Vol 66 No 3 has a photo of a drill brace branded: James Howarth, Sheffield, Rd No 239718.
Now as we all know the No 239718 is ascribed to James Chapman and the chuck is unmistakably Chapman's nonagonal configuration.
This drill brace is probably pre 1915 which year I believe James Howarth was taken over by Robert Sorby.
The author of the article says "These Drill-braces show up in catalogues such as Chandler & Farquhar, Montgomery & Co and Franke and Shindler from the years 1893 to 1903."
Has anyone got any additional information on British drill-braces you've seen or catalogue entries.
Thanks,
Geoff.
