Any good suppliers of brass ferrules that don't charge an arm and a leg for P&P? Ashley Isles have a delay due to sickness, and I lost the will to live trying to find them on Axminster's site.

if it helps, I plan to go o the Harrogate show on Saturday. I could get you some from Ashley Iles or elsewhere and put them in the post to you.

Rod - Ironically the one size I need isn't there! I need about 18mm od. They're for London pattern handles, I have to go over 15mm because of the size of the bolster, but can't really go beyond 18mm because it will spoil the proportion.
Marcross, I'll com back to your offer if nothing materialises. I don't need them before the end of next Friday, but it would be a lot easier were I to get them before then - I'd like to get them fitted and the handles polished. Wp - yes I've used 22mm copper, but it looks horrible.

as long as I know before Saturday morning, no probs at all.

gandmtoolsales on eBay do a set of 24 ferrules for £10. They are inch sizes:

"24 x Brass Ferrule, for chisel and other tool handles, Made in Sheffield, Good Quality.
These are 'proper' brass ferrules for tool handles.
One end of the ferrule is chamfered to make putting them on easier, the larger sizes are indented to grip the handle.
4 each of the following six sizes:
9/16" wide x 1/2"long
11/16" wide x 5/8"long
3/4" wide x 11/16"long
7/8" wide x 3/4"long
1" wide x 3/4"long
1.1/4" wide x 3/4"long
The 11/16 should do you as this is 17.5 mm. They also do a similar set in steel.

I just bought some short lengths of various diameter brass tube from one of the various sellers on e-bay, and cut it to length with a pipe cutter. Looks a lot more professional than copper water pipe, I think.

Got them. A good range of sizes, and not a bad price. Ideal for turners making tools as 8 of them are quite large (4 really).
The £3.50 P&P is the same for more than one pack, and yes, there's £3 actual postage on them. I don't mind paying the P&P when I'm not being robbed. :D

I've used a number of different materials for ferrules over the years including bronze, steel and aluminium. Whatever was to hand at the time. At the end of the day it's just a metal tube to help stop the wood splitting. Manufacturers use the cheapest non rusting material they can find that will do the job = brass. I used to be snobby I guess about using copper tube but I actually prefer the look of it now, and after all copper is more expensive than brass. Of course if you're making high end tools then you should really be using nice thick stainless steel or titanium ferrules...
