Cris, I sometimes boil green rough turned pieces and treat them to the wrap for drying routine, seems to reduce the splitting potential, also if the piece has uneven water content which can lead to blotchy colouring when dried out it tends to blend the colours.

I use an old pressure cooker and give them about 20mins.

Be careful if it is a special piece of wood try a small off cut first to see what happens. Some woods loose colour when boiled I think the worst I tried was Hawthorn it nearly bleached it.
