Hi All,

I cut this pattern today and used 3 blades - and really struggled to finish it with the third blade, (the blades start to wander and require more effort to feed the wood).

I was cutting a 19mm Poplar board stacked on a 19mm Mahogany board (so 38mm total thickness), both boards were taped together with making tape and covered both sides with clear packing tape.

I was using Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse number 5 blades.

Does that sound about right for blade use or is there something I can do better - saw speed, pattern feed speed etc?

Regards,

Budwozza.

There is a lot of cutting in that pattern, so your blade use was not excessive, in fact you did fairly well.

Take care.

Cutting 38mm is a very thick piece of wood for a scroll saw. You went about it the right way though, packing tape on both sides. You would need very good tesion with this sort of thickness and would have to feed the wood into the blade that the saw is comfortable with and this comes with experience. If you push the wood to hard you will either break the blade or the blade will wander off the line of the pattern. At the same time if you go to slow you will end up burning the wood.I feel if younhad used another hardwood instead of the poplar you would have had problems, as it is poplar is quite soft. I to would have used a number 5 blade for that project, which has come out very well.

I was reprimanded for posting a 'likeness' of that pattern recently due to copyright blahblahblah, so just use the photo above as a pattern. Just print it in black & white.
