I don`t normally take my "good bench" tools to work on site but I knew I was fitting some awful Howdens engineered Oak worktop so I took my Veritas low angle block plane. On getting it out of its lovely drawstring bag the other two Joiners came over for a look, they were very impressed until the cost came up, one of them almost choked on his tea at the £140 ish cost they couldnt believe it!!! said his £20 B&Q stanley was just as good and was just as sharp... The challenge was set, I planed one end grain and mark planed the other with his freshly "sharpened" plane of dubious brand, I say planed, he tried to, il looked like someone attacked it with an axe.My end was perfect smooth as glass.
it was agreed, you get what you pay for.

Hmm. A tiler was having a laugh at my Japanese chisels last week, "they're rubbish look at that hollow on the back, you've been done mate." :( Little bit later, "can I borrow your chisel to trim this, I need a sharp 'un."
