I'm sure it's a question that pops up quite often, but any ideas why my bandsaw is squealing?

Its a small Black and Decker one.
I've just stripped it all and cleaned everything up. Set up the guides and bearings after watching a few YouTube videos and it's still doing it.
I need new bearing really as they don't run as I think they have seen better days but they do still run smooth, however it starts to squeal as soon as it cuts, before there is even enough pressure to make the blade contact the bearings and it drifts much more than I would have expected.

Could it be down to a cheap blade? It was on when I bought it but expect it was as cheap as they could find as it was replaced to sell it.

Any ideas?

i would start with a new blade. Then set up the machine again, and see what is causing the squeal. It can only be something slipping, or something semi-seized. If it isnt the bearings because they are not being contacted, it may well be a blunt blade struggling instead of cutting through.

Does it have a drive belt ? if so plan to replace it - but before you do check the drive faces - if they are polished try de glazing them with some very light sanding , a polished belt can slip n squeal .

Mine's fairly noisy but More than likely the drive belt or Some models had variable speed, parts 79,-82 on this link, may need a checkup and/or a good clean in that area,

I'll look at getting a new blade I think.

Thanks Rodders. I'll strip the variable speed part today and give it a check over.

I don't have a manual for the saw and can't find one anywhere. I've found out the blade length is 1510mm. Does anyone know what the min/max blade widths are? Presume minimum will be 1/4" and max 1/2"?

And is there any advantage to swapping from guide blocks to bearings? I think some of the newer models used bearings.

For some reason there seems to be no owners handbooks about for this very useful little bandsaw.
There are some spares to be had just google "B&D 339 Bandsaw" and you'll find exploded drawings, which will show you
how it works and goes together, and between the 3 main spares stockists lots of bits/parts.
HTH Regards Rodders
