A friend has just purchased a windows 8 laptop and it does not have a dvd/cd drive.

Does this mean that only programs loaded by manufacturer and downloads from the internet will be available!!!!!!!!!!!

My H.P. has a dvd drive - win 8 is a pile of crepe, though.

I'd agree 100% with that!

Had my new laptop 10 days and absolutely detest it. I've downloaded a classic shell to tide me over until I can find time to dump it and load Win7.

The other thing I've noticed is that while win7 maintained a rock solid broadband connection, win 8 doesn't. It keeps dropping and having to reset the connection. Bl**dy annoying  I've done all the checks and it's definitely software and IE specific, not hardware issues.

I would, and have, just go to somewhere like PC World and buy a USB external DVD drive.

But I am told you cannot with w8 upload a program from that source?

Programmes can certainly be loaded onto win 8 via a USB DVD drive, or if you are not going to do it often, put the contents of the DVD into a folder on a memory stick and load from that. In the workshop all our programmes are kept on memory sticks and are used for all installations, diagnostics, etc. as the sticks are used on multiple machines they are locked as read only on the main workshop computer so they cannot pick up infections and spread them from one customers computer to another. Have to concur, Win 8 is a pile of dogs doo dah.

If you have Win 8 basic then you can only really use programs written to run using the tiled 'Modern' (Metro) interface which (in my opinion) limits you to a restricted software selection. On the other hand if you have Windows 8 pro then nearly all of the older versions of software that you have previously purchased work fine. As others have said even if the computer doesn't have a built in dvd drive then USB devices work fine.

The 'Metro' interface is designed for touch screen use and using a keyboard with it feels like a bit of a compromise - hence having the desktop screen as well that allows standard keyboard and mouse/trackpad control.

Dont even try to find out, it would just be a waste of 1/2 hour of your life. In that time you could have given a pint of blood, saved someones life and not had your blood pressure rairsed by dealing with that c??p!

I assume for someone who doesnt want to purchase adobe photoshop suite and can use the program on cloud there is some plus.
Looking to the future perhaps you might be able to rent the operation for an hour and pay a fee?

I assume it will only take an adjustment by manufacturers that only apps. downloaded will work. My daugter has that Ipad and no usb or disk drive.

I also reckon the I.T. industry will increasingly come under outside control with these systems and our freedom will be surrendered?

So I am keeping all my old pcs up in the loft.

I had a discussion in the Apple Store and pointed out that not everyone had high speed broadband.
I didn't until a couple of years ago and it used to take 3 days to upgrade my Sat Nav - Garmin had stopped supplying DVDs!
