Hi chaps,

Apologies for the delay; the previous week I was bogged down with work so apart from assembling the machine I didn't have the time to really play about with it. Over the last few evenings I built an ugly stand and then set about testing the drill to see how it performs.

Assembly was nice and easy. The only stage which others may find awkward is lifting the head onto the column as it's pretty heavy. I managed it myself, so it can be done if necessary.

Every part of the drill is chunky, perhaps apart from the guard assembly which is a bit flimsy. I find it's not needed when drilling wood so have removed it, but will put it back on if I have to drill metal.

The table appears to be flat when compared with the edge of a steel ruler, and is square to the spindle. It rises and lowers easily.

There is no movement in the spindle at full extension either.

Just a quick update to say I tried tightening the chuck while wearing gloves, and despite the extra force applied the bit still slips inside the chuck if too much force is exerted with the handle. Although it isn't an issue now, I don't know is it will impact the machine's ability to drill steel. I'll scavenge for some scrap metal and test the drill tomorrow and if it's a problem then I may have to contact Axminster.

Certain you have a duff chuck :(

A gloved hand is defo not needed. Are the shanks of the drills you have tried in good condition, not chewed from previous use?

Hi,

Yes, the shanks are clean and in good condition.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions; I'll contact Axminster on Monday.

Cheers,
Mark
