Does anybody know if the Sorby crossbars are compatible with the Axminster Evolution series stems? I have the Axminster system with a couple of crossbars but I'm missing the curved toolrest that went with my CL1 when I sold it.

As far as I can see, Axminster don't do a curved toolrest for the Evolution series but there is a Sorby one. (In fact there are two, for internal and external bowl turning.)

Alternatively, if anyone can point me to a reasonably priced curved rest with 1" stem, I'd be grateful.

Sorry, n odirect answer but related question. Are there any issues with these type of tool rests coming lose during use? They look like a nice idea but I've always stayed clear for that reason (or can you only use one side of the rest for anything other than very light cuts?)

^I did have that problem at first - the answer is to lock the assembled toolrest in the banjo and give the crossbar a good twist. No problems since.

I've made a couple of my own threaded ones and as said, as long as it's tight it shouldn't move.

Take your Axminster stem over to John Davis Woodturning Terry and see if it fits. Best phone first but I think he had some in stock last time I looked.

Good idea Vic, I might do that.

The alternative is to just buy a crossbar online and see if it fits. If it doesn't the Sorby stems are only eleven quid or so if you look around (on the online auction site that must not be mentioned here) - cheaper than the Axminster ones! I should have gone Sorby in the first place - lots more fittings available...

I did find out what the threads were on the Sorby Modular system, but I have forgotten.
Anecdotal evidence says they purposely chose an uncommon thread.
Something like 1/2" x 12 or 14 TPI.

Interesting... the only thing I have to check threads is my cheapo Draper metric tap and die set and I can say that the Axminster system definitely doesn't have a standard metric thread.

This same question has been asked before, I can't remember if it was here or on another forum and the outcome was that they were not compatible.

Thanks Dalboy. I've ordered the Sorby curved crossbar so we shall soon see. Not too bothered if I have to buy the Sorby stem - as I said, it's only eleven quid including postage.

I'm lead to believe that the thread on the Sorby is finer than that of the Axminster, in this application a finer thread is preferable as there is less likelihood of movement caused by vibration.
