I've just come back from a few days in Whitby. It was the Folk Festival last week, and I spent one afternoon in the Middle Earth pub at a singaround. I have a very small repertoire (no making up your own jokes, please), but my signature effort is a Neil Diamond number, which I duly sang, accompanied by my mate Bob and getting the rest of the room to take the part of the brass section.

The following day I was in Whitby, minding my own business, looking in a shop window, when I was accosted by a bloke and his wife.

A tap on the shoulder, and, "I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your rendition of Sweet Caroline yesterday. It was really good, thank you."

My ghast had never been more flabbered. I am the least professional of all the musicians in that room. But I have a fan, I've been groupied!

"Sweet Caroline, ba, ba, baaam,
Good time never seemed so good..."

He wasn't even drunk.

Spent many a happy session in the Middle Earth pub during Whitby Folk Week. Never heard anyone sing Sweet Caroline mind. Not that i'm a critic as i wouldn't have the bottle to sing anything myself, so well done.

VERY well done Steve. I've done a couple of bits of singing in public, including a solo spot (VERY nerve-wracking) and would you believe, NOBODY has "groupied" me - well not yet anyway, and frankly, I'm not holding my breath either!

Well done that man.

I've just been back to the same on karaoke bar (you can tell I'm on holiday). It wasn't very busy, just me, a bloke called Colin and one called Dave. Dave I'd profoundly deaf, so can't hear the music, but it doesn't stop him having a go. It's musically excruciating but everyone cheers him on. Coli and I sort of took it in turns.then a couple of Italian ladies arrived. One got up to sing.
She had the voice of an angel. And really tricky stuff, too. Think Aretha Franklin. We did a duo and it was just excellent.
Great fun.
