These planes were sold at auction in Bletchingley, Surrey last week.

The Holtey rosewood steel and brass plane (no reserve) realised £1650.

The Mathieson of Glasgow 10.5in steel and rosewood plane
Estimate: 100-200 realised £980. Both plus commission of 16% (plus VAT).

This is my first posting with images. I hope it appears OK.

They're worth it to someone, but only a collector I would have thought. I'd love a Holtey but need working planes and couldn't justify the expense

To a collector maybe, but I cannot believe that they can be truly worth the money.

Might just be an inflation proof investment though to keep in a warm dry safe!!

"Worth" is a relative term and it is really down to what people are prepared to pay?

At £1650 the Holtey is relatively cheap and to some a "bargain" - when new must have cost over £3k?

Rod :)

I thought the Mathieson was a fair price,
Norrises seem to be way down at the moment.
Holteys are a bit of an unknown quantity as so few come to market. At almost 50% off new mybe not out of the way.
Probably end up with Waka for site work......
Cheers,
Martin

If I was rolling in cash I'd buy them. But not for collecting purposes. I'd use them because they would make me a better woodworker.... wouldn't they? :?
