It was wet when acquired, (rain) but has not split or warped on drying:

The bark looks a lot like Yew, and is very thin. When wet, wood exudes red stain.

Pear? Apple? Fir?

My first thoughts are yew .

Must admit it was my first thought but was confused by the growth rate, seems high in its early years judging by the rings.

Same here - looks like the yew I have waiting to go on the lathe at the moment (same bark/colour/heart + sapwood)

But we could very easily all be proved wrong,as we know

Yew is a softwood isn't it, albeit a hard one, or am I completely wrong?

Yep.

How hard is it Chas?

Hardness has nothing to do with defining whether its a hard or softwood eg balsa is a hardwood and yew is a softwood.

The definition of a softwood is that it is is evergreen and that a hardwood is deciduous or to be more specific a softwood tree is a gymnosperm and a hardwood tree is an angiosperm.

More here if anyone is interested:http://home.howstuffworks.com/question598.htm

I have seen some softwoods that looked very similar to that.

Hard enough to to be difficult to push a Thumb Tack in.
My little block plane does not like it.

Then I would say that it is Yew, hard as nails ( I have a small coffee table made from it ) :)
It does come up very nice when finished :)

Thanks Guys, not used to pieces this big(wide) and colour is very light compared to the small limbs I have stored for turning, guess it must have grown in ideal conditions somewhere to be this size and no occlusions etc.
