air sanders

Does anyone use a compressed air sander? A small(ish) one ideally. Are they any good? I'm under using a decent compressor and wonder if there is any advantage. I'm not interested in a cheapish tool that you need a mortgage to buy the paper for. I have a half sheet Makita, so that sort of work is catered for.
Any observations and recommendations are welcome.

I have used this model quite extensively in the past for car bodywork on 2 restoration projects and a kit car build. Was fine to use, though it would get a little cold after about 20 mins on the fingers of continous use: Hook and loop pad too so takes mirka autonet and abranet which is great:

Be careful to check your compressor is large enough, air sanders eat a lot of air.

a 125 or 150 dia ROS would do the trick -there are plenty on ebay.

I bought a 150mm ROS with 5mm orbit last year for about £15.00 as a back up -its not as good as a mirka tool but it does the job

Personally unless you are in an industrial environment i can't see the point in running a 3hp motor to power an air hungry sander.

It wouldn't be the only air tool. I was thinking about a 50mm - 75mm unit as I have a large sander already. Still speculative.

The BIL gave me this a while back:-



He got it off a paint factors rep. No box no book, but a load of discs.
It's pretty good Phil. I beggered about with my compressors and manged to get it running off my smallest compressor which claims 6 cfm output :| . The compressor did get a little breathless though. Had to wait now and again to let build up a bit.

Anyway here's a link to the sander. I was surprised how cheap it is.

Just don't buy it from that store, absolutely terrible terrible terrible establishment.
Their prices are great but that's where the good things ends
