I have just invested in a second hand Senior Drum Sander and I'm now faced with the quandary of where to buy the sand paper from and what type. I've looked at Axi's offering which seems very expensive. I'm thinking perhaps of investing in some super flexible J cloth backed stuff, but not sure if this the right thing for a drum sander? Any advise would be appreciated.

Yes, cloth-backed is pretty essential. Paper just rips.
Bear in mind that you have to buy abrasive that is the right width. If you use a different width, it is very likely that the end of the strip does not meet the end of the drum at the right point on the circumference, which in turn means that you cannot secure it in place.

I buy wide belts and cut them down - the loadings end up costing a few quid each doing it that way!

Hi Dodge
Good afternoon
I have a Jet 10-20 drum sander. I notice your blog on UKWorkshops.
I see from your web site you are a professional carpenter, I would welcome your experience
The wide belts you cut down are they paper backed?
Do they survive fairly well used with care?
I only use the sander occasionally and so do not need 20year supply at my time of life and not purchasing 25metres odd.
My belts are 1.5 metre long

Richard

Just replied to your email Richard

Paper backed abrasives don't work on drum sanders i'm afraid

Hi Dodge and everyone who put forward information. Fantastic to be able to call on all this experience.

Kind regards
